Data validation

Validating metocean data, and making sure they are reliable, is crucial to reduce uncertainties and risks. This applies to measured and computed data alike.

Since 2016, MetOcean Consult has been involved in the validation and quality control of the offshore measurement campaigns for several offshore wind farm sites of the Dutch government (RVO) in the North Sea.

Validation of hindcast data

The accuracy of archived hindcast data can be greatly improved by validating them against satellite or in-situ data. At MetOcean Consult this validation is a standard step before we deliver data to our clients.

We validate, and where needed correct, hindcast wind, wave and water level data against satellite data and in-situ measurements.

Validation of measurement campaigns

We validate near real-time contractor measurements of waves, currents, water levels and other parameters against reference data, through the analysis of time series, scatter diagrams, statistical parameters and statistical distributions.

Validation of a wave measurement campaign: measured significant wave height from two instruments compared with each other and with a Copernicus Marine model, with time series, differences, histograms, exceedance, scatter, QQ-plot, Bland-Altman bias and statistics.

Advanced wave measurement validation

We apply advanced methods to validate wave measurement instruments such as wave buoys. Based on the five Fourier coefficients, usually available at discrete frequency intervals, we compare parameters as a function of frequency and energy level.

This spectral component analysis shows for which frequency ranges an instrument is most accurate, and where it is less accurate. It applies to any wave measuring device that provides the five Fourier coefficients.

As an independent consultancy, we provide objective instrument validation, as often required at the start and end of measurement campaigns (pre- and post-validation).
