Wave studies

MetOcean Consult has 20 years of experience in wave modeling in a wide range of circumstances. We make use of state-of-the-art spectral wave models (SWAN, MIKE21-SW, WaveWatch-III ™) as well as time domain non-hydrostatic and boussinesq models (SWASH and MIKE21-BW) and maintain close connections with the developers of these models.

We perform wave studies at all scales: from global and basin wide hindcasts (WaveWatch-III ™, SWAN) to (small) harbors (SWASH, MIKE21-BW). In all our studies, we use accurate and reliable (offshore) wind- and wave data as model forcing and/or as boundary conditions.

  • Wave hindcasts
  • Cyclone hindcast
  • Nearshore wave studies
  • Wave penetration in ports and harbours
  • Long wave resonance

Wave hindcasts
Hindcast models producing longterm hourly timeseries (as from 1979 to date) of wave parameters have been developed or are under development for the following regions:

  • Arabian Gulf
  • Black Sea
  • Red Sea
  • Mediterranean Sea
  • Caspian Sea
  • North Sea

Information on model background, performance, products and pricing can be provided upon request.

Cyclone studies
Our wave hindcasts are typically produced using longterm reanalysis windfields. However, due to their relatively coarse resolution, these windfields do no resolve tropical cyclones in sufficient detail. Therefore, for cyclone prone areas, we supplement the non-cyclone regime data with hindcasts based on information from historical storm track databases. In addition, we perform statistical analysis of extreme event for the cyclone regime.

Nearshore wave studies
MetOcean Consult has extensive experience with detailed wave transformation studies to support the planning and design of coastal developments and ports. We provide:

  • Nearshore wave climatology
  • Extreme design wave conditions
  • Wave penetration studies in ports and harbours
  • Downtime- and workability assessments
  • Layout optimization
Nearshore wave study (SWAN) for Eko Atlantic City Project (Nigeria)
We make use state-of-the-art spectral- or time domain models, e.g:
  • SWAN (Delft University of Technology)
  • MIKE21-SW (DHI)
  • SWASH (Delft University of Technology)
  • MIKE21-BW (DHI)

When possible, we validate our models with wave measurements from surveys.
